Receiving an ostomy bag is a life-changing, and life-saving operation, but it isn't a life-ending one. The goal of The No You Cant'cer Foundation's publication "It's in the Bag" is to educate and abolish stigmas.
There are many myths surrounding the ostomy bag, but none of them are true. Here are a few of the questions we answer in our informational pamphlets:
Will people be able to tell that I'm wearing a bag?
- No! The ostomy bag has been carefully designed to be sleek, and hardly visible while you're dressed. While it may feel like everyone notices your bag, chances are, they have no idea! You can choose to disclose, or not, at your comfort.
I used to live a very active lifestyle. Will I be able to play sports and work out again?
- Of course! As soon as your doctor clears you for physical activity, you can resume your spot on the biking team, see a trainer at the gym, and take a dance class. Your ostomy bag is a prosthetic that will allow you to do all of you usual activities, and then some
Many important resources are also listed out in an easy, concise, way. These resources include, but are not limited to, The United Ostomy Associations of America and Gilda's Club, as a good support group is just as valuable as a good medical team.
