The Sidney Prize is an award that honors journalism that serves the public good, presented monthly by the Hillman Foundation since 1946 in memory of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union president (analogous to Unite Here or Workers United SEIU). It recognizes journalists pursuing “deep storytelling and investigative reporting in service of social justice”. Winners are announced on the second Wednesday of every month; recipients receive a $500 honorarium as well as bottle of union-made wine produced through union labor and certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel.
This prize was named after 19th-century Southern poet Sidney Lanier, famous for his depictions of rural life in his poems and short stories. It recognizes work that engages and extends the tradition of writing about the South or provides significant scholarship on its literary and cultural traditions; sponsored by Spencer B. King Jr. Center for Southern Studies at Mercer University and awarded in 2020 to Western Carolina University professor Ron Rash for his longstanding contributions as a writer of southern culture and history.
