At this year’s hk prize, athletes and artists were the big winners, with fencing star Vivian Kong topping individual epee, swimmer Edgar Cheung Ka-long taking home two bronze medals in 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle, and art collector Sammo Hung taking both public vote and panel award for his work Untitled (Still Life with Flowers). All awards were handed out during a gala dinner held at Four Seasons Hotel on Friday evening.
The Hong Kong Film Awards, previously known as the Asian Pacific Cinema Critics Association (APCA) Awards, is an annual ceremony hosted by film critics and journalists from thirteen professional film bodies in Hong Kong to recognize outstanding achievements in local films. Winners are selected by a panel of judges from nominations submitted by members of APCA.
As the inaugural winner of HK$100 million, the Hong Kong Future Science Prize aims to inspire young people towards science and technology studies while making Hong Kong an international hub of scientific research and innovation. Established by Jockey Club and University of Hong Kong, it comprises three prizes totaling US$1 million each for life science, physical science, mathematics and computer science; with the winner receiving HK$10 million for winning while silver and bronze medallists receiving 6 and 3 respectively.
The award seeks to recognize those who embody the genuine spirit of Hong Kong through community contributions, acts of self-sacrifice, cultural preservation and good corporate citizenship. Furthermore, it honors their passion for achieving seemingly impossible tasks while making an impactful difference in Hong Kong society.
This year’s record HK$16 Million Prize Money went to an unprecedented number of athletes, led by fencer Vivian Kong winning both individual epee and team sabre events. Furthermore, SCMP was the top arts and culture winner – four awards went their way including Kate Li Bingcun’s three-part series about Hong Kong becoming an international cultural and artistic hub; other winners included China Daily Hong Kong Edition and CTV News.
